In England, between 800 BC and 450 BC, Celtic culture spread through Britain. Iron working, adopted through contact with or immigration by Celtic peoples of Europe, starts with sword making (Hallstaff culture), later extends to other weapons and tools. Hillforts further developed, containing numerous small houses. Walled farmsteads found, especially in the west and north. Wheat is grown, the 2-ox plough is introduced, sheep and cattle farming is common in the north. Wool is woven for clothing. There is trade with Europe cross-channel, and tin is exported to the Mediterranean by Atlantic route. |

Enc. Britannica - A Solar Eclipse visible in Assyria on 15th June 763 BC. "The Assyrian eponym canon, which preserves the names of the annual magistrates who gave their names to the years (similar to the Athenian archons or Roman consuls), records under the year that corresponds to 763-762 BC: 'Insurrection in the city of Ashur. In the month Sivan (equivalent to May-June), the Sun was eclipsed'. The reference must be to the eclipse of 15 June 763 BC, the only large solar eclipse visible in Assyria over a period of many years. (This eclipse makes it possible to carry the chronology back with certainty through the period covered by that canon to 893 BC.) A possible allusion to the same eclipse is found in the Old Testament: 'And on that day (says the Lord God) I will make the sun go down at noon, and darken the earth in broad daylight' (Amos 8.9)." |
Amos prophesied during the reigns of King Jeroboam II in Israel, and King Uzziah in Judah. Amos 1.1 of the Holy Bible, says that the time of his prophecy was two years before an earthquake. The equivalent years during which Jeroboam II and Uzziah were ruling at the same time in their individual kingdoms, were between the years 809 BC and 783 BC (according to this chronology). This eclipse would be seen throughout Israel and Amos's prophecy said that after ths eclipse, the evil of the rulers of the nation would be punished by famine, a thirst for the word of God, and an ultimate captivity into the hands of the nation's enemies. This did happen ten years later, in 753 BC when the Kingdom of Israel was taken captive by Sennnacherab to Assyria. The Kingdom of Judah eventually fell with the destruction in Jerusalem in 587 BC. |
