The following commentary was extracted from the book "Today, Tomorrow and the Great Beyond" by John S. Fox: In 606-7 AD, Emperor "Phocas" whose seat was in Constantinople, bowed in submission to the Pope in Rome, Boniface III, pronouncing him the true and lawful head over all the churches of Christendom. This was an epoch-making event which opened the gateway of power to the Roman Pontiffs. It is memorialised by a stone monument known as the "Pillar of Phocas" which still stands in Rome, bearing the inscription and date: "Die prima Mensis August Indict. Und. ac Pietatis ejus Anno Quinto, Pro innumerabilibus Pietatis ejus Beneficciis." (Interpreted: The first day of the month of August, in the eleventh Indiction, being the fifth year of his Papacy. To commemorate the innumerable Blessings of his Papacy.) The actual decree reads as follows: "Hic rogante PAPA BONEFICIO statuit sedem Romanae et Apostolicae ecclesiae caput esse omnium ecclesiarum, quia ecclesia Constantinopolitana prima se omnium ecclesiarum scribat." (Interpreted: Pope Boniface decrees that the seat of the Roman Apostolic Church is the head of all the Churches, because the Church of Constantinople declared (literally "wrote") that it was the head of all the Churches.) At this time, Papal temporal power virtually commenced, centred in Rome, spreading rapidly throughout the Continental Roman earth in Western Europe. The history of the transfer of power in the Roman earth from pagan to Papal sovereignty is full of interest. Before the "Mystery of Iniquity", or the Influence which inspired and caused the Papal power could succed in working itself by religious guise into complete sovereignty over the pagan Roman earth, it was necessary that the dominion of the Caesars and Emperors should be "taken out of the way". It is interesting to note how the establishment of Constantinople by Constantine in 331 AD, and the transfer of pagan Roman power thither at that time, was the first step in the process of taking out of the way of all authority from pagan Rome itself in the west, paving the way for the subsequent rise in Rome of Papal supremacy. (see II Thessalonians 2.3-8).

Mohamet rises to power in the Eastern section of the two halves of the old Roman Empire. The Mohammedans thereafter claimed their particular faith as the one and only true religion, all dissenters at that time and subsequently being killed by the sword. Mohamet's flight from Mecca. The Mohammedan calendar, known as the "Hegira", starts from this date, reckoning in lunar years, not solar years. (The 1335th lunar year on the Mohammedan calendar is equivalent to our Christian solar year of 1917 AD.) On the other hand, the rise of the Papacy in the Western section of the old Roman Empire from 606 AD, also claimed to hold the only true religion, all those protesting against it being slain mercilessly at the stake and elsewhere. "An occultation of a bright star by the eclipsed Moon in AD 756 (actually the previous year) is the subject of an entry in the chronicle of Simeon of Durham, compiled some four centuries after the event: 'Moveover, the Moon was covered with a blood-red color on the 8th day before the Kalends of December (i.e. November 24) when 15 days old, that is, the Full Moon; and then the darkness gradually decreased and it returned to its original brightness. And remarkably indeed, a bright star following the Moon itself passed through it, and after the return to brightness it preceded the Moon by the same distance as it had followed the Moon before it was obscured.' "The text gives no hint of the identity of the star. Modern computations show that the Moon was totally eclipsed on the evening of November 23, AD 755. During the closing stages of the eclipse, Jupiter would have been occulted by the Moon, as seen from England. this is an example of the care with which an observer who was not an astronomer could describe a compound astronomical event without having any real understanding of what was happening."

Enc. Britannica - "By far the most vivid account (of an eclipse in Byzantine history ) relates to the solar eclipse of 22nd December 968 AD. This was penned by the contemporary chronicler Leo the Deacon: 'At the winter solstice there was an eclipse of the Sun such as has never happened before ... It occurred on the 22nd day of the month of December, at the 4th hour of the day, the air being calm. Darkness fell upon the Earth and all the brighter stars revealed themselves. Everyone could see the disk of the Sun without brightness, deprived of light, and a certain dull and feeble glow, like a narrow headband, shining round the extreme parts of the edge of the disk. However, the Sun gradually going past the Moon (for this appeared covering it directly) sent out its original rays, and light filled the Earth again.' "This is the earliest account of the solar corona that can be definitely linked to a datable eclipse. Although the appearance of the corona during totality is rather impressive, early descriptions of it are extremely rare. Possibly many ancient and medieval eyewitnesses were so terrified by the onset of sudden darkness that they failed to notice that the darkened Sun was surrounded by a diffuse envelope of light."
